This week Ekaterina, Lars and I attended EPINOR’s yearly summer school here in Trondheim. Two interesting days with epidemiological (the study of how often diseases occur in different groups of people and why) focus and social activities.

Professor Lars Johan Vatten from the Department of Public Health and Nursing (ISM) started with an interesting lecture about the importance of choosing good mentors and told about several persons who have been important mentors for his career. We have our strengths and weaknesses and Vatten emphasized finding mentors who complement our weaknesses and challenge our strengths.
Professor Tom Ivar Lund Nilsen, also from ISM, gave a lecture on how we should respond to referees in the process of publishing our work. The process of publishing is time consuming because the article needs to be read, evaluated and approved by other researchers within the field, before it is published. Lund Nilsen gave examples from his own experiences and came with good advice.
The rest of the academic program consisted of lectures by Lund Nilsen and Professor Johan Håkon Bjørngaard, from ISM, and group work on methodological issues in epidemiology.
There was also made time for social activities. We went to Trondheim Arena and competed in a very informal 3-battle competition. The battles were blacklight kanonball, wipeout and lazer tag. Great fun! Afterwards we met at Café Løkka for dinner.
We are already excited about next year’s summer school.
Wishing you all a great summer vacation.
